[In response to a listener's question after the program Comments on storing water and using Iodine (dangerous) and Clorox which is a halogen (carcinogen)] Well, I will not argue on the merits of one being dangerous and the other a carcinogen but other than boiling water to kill bacteria and disease-causing organisms there are only two emergency recommended ways to purify water. One is liquid 2% tincture of Iodine 20 drops for each gallon of clean water or 40 drops for cloudy water. Mix the water thoroughly and let stand for at least 30 minutes. Interesting point, Iodine tablets were developed during World War II to disinfect small amounts of water for emergency or temporary use. Even today a few drops of tincture iodine or iodine tablets are popular with campers and the military for disinfecting water. In the past few years, bleach has been added to the list of products available to disinfect water under emergency conditions. This only requires that there should be 5.25% of available chlorine in the bleach you use. To disinfect clear water only 8 drops is required per gallon. For cloudy water use 16 drops per gallon. Under emergency conditions some risks must or may be taken and I for one would rather have the capability of disinfecting water than taking the chance of drinking water that may be contaminated, at least there are choices.
