~~~ Leah Pettepiece ~~~
"Oh, Israel...land running with milk and honey...land of Contradiction. The faces of Israel are many and the faces that the public sees are few of those! One needs only to live here in the heart of this country to know that there is an illness here, a disease that if not checked will eventually yield our country over a type of life that is disabled in the eyes of the rest of the modern world."
Leah Pettepiece author of "I Am My Mother's Memory", a book that describes her childhood and in which we can see the spirit of a woman who would forever speak and act from her own truth. She has indeed done that, from her teen years when she spoke out during the Vietnam war in spite of personal cost, to today, when she writes about Israel ...where she and her husband Theo relocated to be involved in the movement toward peace in the mideast, until... well, listen to her story.
What she writes and speaks of is difficult for many to accept and the response is often bitterness and hatred. "Due to all we have learned we have come to understand that there is a great need for change, there is a world vision which exists in the collective consciousness of man and it is not one that is held within rigid rules of a certain performance within a religion, nor is it tied to specific behaviors that must be duplicated by everyone, nor is confined to what one group of people say we must read, or a recipe for prayers which must be repeated day after day in the same fashion. We believe that our Creator gave us guidelines for our work here on earth but that along with those guidelines we were expected to grow and learn and become all that is possible...not to stagnate in a tepid pool of sameness!"
"Growing up in the Shadow"
Her book is about living in the shadow of the holocaust yet isn't focused on that (readers comment: "How did you write this without the dark side?") it is about what it was like for a child... "Mama, what is that on your arm?" and receiving tremendous anger in response. People have no idea how their actions and words affect children. Then Leah expands our knowledge and perception with a short history of the Torah; spiritual evolution and stagnation; what is man supposed to do? And what she and husband Theo believe. "We're putting barriers up to what really is... entire populations are stagnating." 'You can never step in the same river twice..' [from a Heraclitus quote]
"Israel, The Land of Milk and Honey...?"
If your perception of Israel is a clean forward thinking progressive state, get ready for a shock. "As a tourist that is what you are shown, but living there quickly reveals a dark truth of what it is, including what are called "Black Cities" those under the strict control of the ultra orthodox." One example ...women don't receive an education as their sole purpose is to produce children and the Rabbi selects their husbands... "Israel no longer exists, the people are cynical, corrupt, and shameless in their behavior towards one another and others... and the one thing the ultra orthodox do that is identical to what the super, super religious Muslims do, is they teach their children to hate everybody equally!"
